Nothing between you and the freeway but a chain link fence

Auburn Blvd. between Fulton and the westbound on-ramp to Business 80 (a bit west of Watt) continues to be a dangerous place. That's the roadway segment where only a chain link fence separates pedestrians, cyclists and local vehicles from the freeway traffic. Worse, the freeway is about 2-3 feet higher than Auburn Blvd. There is neither a guard rail nor a sound wall to keep errant traffic from crashing through the fence. And there aren't any K-barriers there, either - like the temporary walls CalTrans is using to protect its "Fix 50" freeway worksites. (BTW, CalTrans has more K-barriers than anyone else in the universe.) Is it any wonder why that fence constantly needs to be repaired or replaced?

This isn't the first time we've mentioned the problem there. Sadly, it is unlikely to be the last time, either. The problem persists because the invisible dotted line that defines the City of Sacramento's city limits runs down the middle of Auburn Blvd. The City of Sacramento's jurisdiction begins at that dotted line that defines the half of the street closest to the freeway and spans the freeway to include the golf course on the other side of the freeway. We all know how much the City of Sacramento stresses over being a "good neighbor" to its adjacent unincorporated nowhereland. We are well aware that the City of Sacramento spends its money (when it has it) where its voters and donors are; there are none of them on their side of Auburn Blvd. And you can be assured that the City of Sacramento isn't knocking on Caltrans' door in search of safety along that segment of Auburn Blvd. The County has jurisdiction over our unincorporated community, which is on the half of the street away from the freeway. Likewise for the CHP. The CHP also has jurisdiction on the freeway.  So "What about the County?", you might ask, or "What about the CHP?" Well, no, actually, you probably wouldn't ask those questions because you already know the answers, don't you?
